The Next Chapter For Japan’s Favorite Sports Wagon Could Hide A Powertrain Surprise

Subaru may be focused on the US market, which accounts for nearly 70% of its global sales, but it still builds a few models tailored for its home audience in Japan. One of those is the Levorg, a sporty wagon rumored to undergo a redesign next year.

The Levorg made its debut in 2014 as a wagon version of the WRX sedan, followed by a second generation in 2020. If Subaru maintains its six-year product cycle, the next version should appear in fall 2026. This update is expected to be more of a significant facelift than a ground-up redesign, introducing a hybrid powertrain option. However, Japanese outlet Best Car suggests it might even be marketed as a third generation.

Sharper Styling

Citing inside sources, the outlet says that the upcoming Levorg will take on a sportier look, with a sharper front end and a boxier profile. This direction contrasts with the larger Outback, which has shifted from a crossover wagon into a more SUV-like shape. Thanks to the addition of the Levorg Layback body style in 2023, the standard model is expected to keep its low-slung proportions.

The redesigned Levorg will reportedly measure 4,780 mm (188.2 inches) in length, 1,820 mm (71.7 inches) in width, and 1,480 mm (58.3 inches) in height. That would make it slightly longer, a bit wider, and marginally lower than the current model. It will likely remain on an upgraded version of Subaru’s existing Global Platform rather than starting from a clean-sheet design, which means the wheelbase will likely remain the same at 2,670 mm (105.1 inches).

Inside, the sport wagon is expected to feature the latest iteration of Subaru’s EyeSight ADAS suite. It could also gain a more advanced digital cockpit inspired by the 2026 Subaru Outback. Space and practicality will likely be on par with the outgoing model.

Hybrid and Gasoline Options

The most significant update could be under the hood. Following the lead of the Crosstrek and Forester, the new Levorg is expected to adopt Subaru’s Strong Hybrid (S:HEV) system, combining Toyota’s electric motor and generator with Subaru’s 2.5-liter boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive. In the Forester Hybrid, this setup produces 194 hp (145 kW / 197 PS), and the Levorg could deliver similar performance, possibly with improved efficiency thanks to better aerodynamics.

Alongside the self-charging hybrid, the Levorg is expected to retain the existing 1.8-liter turbocharged boxer engine as an option. The more potent turbo 2.4-liter powertrain might not be available at launch, but it could return later in the model cycle, allowing for a performance variant with STI Sport branding.

It’s believed that the new Levorg could start at around ¥4.3 million ($29,100) in Japan when it launches next year. The current model is priced between ¥3,630,000 and ¥5,368,000.

While Japan will remain the core market, the Levorg is also exported to Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia. North American sales remain unlikely, as the region’s buyers lean heavily toward crossovers and SUVs instead of wagons.
